The single camera technique is when all footage is shot with a single camera. This technique usually appears in low budget productions. This is used a lot in music videos, sitcoms and commercial advertising. The band OK GO is known for using this technique. OK GO is an alternative rock band that is known for the quirky and elaborate music vocals and videos. OK GO are a good example of a band that use the single camera technique and does it all in one take which means if they mess it up they have to retake the whole video. However they make the single camera technique very cool and interesting. They do this by using only one camera which they use to take there one long take which gives there music video a narrative easily as you follow the artists (tracking). The single camera technique makes this bands videos much more interesting and creative. This is because it makes the video more interesting and creative but this does come at a cost. Using the single camera technique means its more time consuming however it gives the director much better control over each shot/scene. There are many advantages to single camera production which are that it is low budget as you only use one camera instead of multiple, you don’t even need to buy cameras because you could rent them, directors have more control each individual shot and one camera is easy to move around. These advantages will lead to a much lower cost, which is helpful as generally the artists, or advertisers are just starting out and have a low budget. The advantages can also lead to a much better production occasionally. However there are also very many disadvantages to single camera production as well. Some examples are that it is very time consuming, if the camera becomes damaged or broken all your work may be lost and that its very hard to capture a huge variety of shots especially when you want to film in one take. There are two styles when using a single camera. The first is one long take, the one long take means that the video is shot all in one go and doesn’t have cuts. This means that it is very time consuming and that the variety of shots is limited due to not cutting, but this didn’t stop OK GO who used a Octacopter which allowed them to film from the ground level shots to 700 meters high. The other style is multi shot filming. This is filming in separate shots with one camera that are later edited together in order to create the sequence. This technique has many advantages and disadvantages much like the other technique. Firstly the technique makes the videos much easier then single take and makes music videos much more interesting to watch. This technique is also fairly cheap as there is only one camera used in the production. However the fact that this is shot in multiple shots makes it look like any other video and therefore is less interesting than the one take technique. In conclusion I believe a single camera technique video has a much better narrative as you normally track the artist(s). This means that you get a much better understanding of the video. The single camera technique generally means that all camera angles are limited. I find that single camera techniques are interesting techniques that allow music videos and other projects to be much more creative and unique .
