In this essay I will be comparing the meanings that are conveyed by to very different music videos. The two music videos that I chose to analyse were “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri and “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson. I chose these songs, as they are extremely different to one another. Jar of Hearts was a pop song that was released by the American singer in July of 2010. The song was a success and was aimed at those who have had relationship problems. Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson released my second song “Uptown Funk” in November of 2010. This song was also a large success and was at the top of the charts for a large amount of time. The song was aimed at a younger audience with its catchy and upbeat beat. Jar of Hearts takes place in a deserted wasteland that had once been filled with life but is now empty and barren. This emphasizes the words and the meaning of the song by visually displaying that her love was once the like civilisation but is now destroyed and crushed. This helps the song lyrics to stand out more and have a greater meaning. This is very common in music videos today, however Uptown Funk doesn’t use its location to emphasize the meaning but to emphasize only apart of the lyrics. Uptown Funk uses a lot of props that help to display the true meaning and theme of this song which is about being attractive, rich and talented. Some examples of props that are used in this video are things that as newspapers, cars and jewellery, each of these represent having money and possibly attractive. Whereas Jar of Hearts doesn’t use as many props t help to represent the meaning of the song that is to make you realise her pain and struggle. However the music does use some props such as dead leaves and flowers, which are very powerful and help to emphasize this meaning. In Jar of Hearts the selection of shots was fairly limited. The video used mainly mid shots this proved that Christina Perry was main subject. An extreme close up was used during the kissing scene to reflect the intensity and emotions of the subjects. Whereas on the other hand Uptown Funk uses a lot of shots that are used to keep the audience intrigued and follow this upbeat genre. For example a lot of tracking shots were used throughout. Oddly a dutch tilt was used which would also help to keep the audience entertained with its creativity.
Both of the music videos have identified that editing is a key aspect within their production. Many short takes were used throughout each video creating a high tempo following conventions of a stereotypical music video. Quick cuts are also used rather than fades etc to keep the tempo and make the videos feel up beat. Once reviewing my chosen music videos i have found that sound in music videos is fairly similar however can create different meanings depending on the type. Most music videos use a lot of non diegetic sounds that are added in during the editing process. For example in Jar of hearts there are many non diegetic sounds such as the glass smashing and the soundtrack that the artist is sing over. The choice of sounds that the song uses all help to create the mood of the music video. Whereas the sounds that are used in Bruno Mars's are made to compliment the upbeat tune and mood of the music video. These music videos also use a couple of diegetic sounds like the singing. The lighting that is used in these music videos is very different but are both used to fit the songs beat and tempo. Jar of Hearts used a very dark and gloomy lighting that emphasizes the effect of the lyrics, which is very sad and depressing. Whereas in Uptown Funk the lighting that is used is much brighter and vibrant however this doesn’t link to the meaning of the music video unlike Jar of Hearts. The costumes that are used in he two music videos are extremely different however both make emphasis on the words and meaning of the music video. In the Jar of Heartes music video the costume is a white dress that is contrasting the mode of the song which is very downbeat and emotional. Whereas the costumes in Uptown Funk are very bright and classy which fits the upbeat tune and style of the song. The costumes that are being worn are suits of a variety of colours. Jar of Hearts uses very few props such as dead leaves that represent once alive and lovely but now dead and dark. Uptown Funk uses props that are very different to ones used in Jar of Hearts but also convey the meaning of the music video. Uptown Funk uses props such as newspapers and jewellery that represent higher class, which is one of the man meanings of the music video. In conclusion the meaning that is conveyed in both music videos is very different but the music video display the both meanings in the same way. This is all done by the use of Mise en scene, lighting, cinematography, sound and editing.
