In this case study I will be analysing an auteur and what makes them an auteur. I will also be having a look some of their music videos to show what styles and conventions they have between each piece of work. The auteur that I have chosen to analyse is Spike Jonze. Spike Jonze is an American director, producer, screenwriter and actor that has work with music videos, commercials, film and even television. He was born October 22nd 1969 and started his career directing with "Being John Malkovich" in 1999 and then began to create his own screenplays such as "Where the Wild Things are" a very well known film. In the current day Spike is more well known for his music video collaborations with artists Fatboy Slim, Weezer, Beastie Boys, Bjork and Kanye West. Recently he has also been nominated for four Academy Awards for his great work in the past. Spike Jonze style is that he likes to make the most out of using simple aspects such as lens flares, centred framing and wide angle close ups. Jonze also likes to create a feeling that appears like story telling in his productions and he often uses the animation, puppetry or mix of live action to display this style. His style is almost like a trade mark to him. His work as a director later turned into him being an auteur theorist. An auteur is a director that influences their own style into each and every production so much that they are ranked as an author. Spikes breakthrough was a video for the well known Beastie Boys song "Soabotage" , Sabotage was inspired on1970s cop shows and earnt him recognition and four MTV Video Awards. Beastie boys " Sabotage" is a good example of some of his work as he clearly displays his style/trademark in tho music video. The music video starts with opening credits of a 1970s police show called Sabotage which is put the the band very energetic music. In this music video Spike uses each member of the band as a character from the show that are introduced as fictional actors through the use the on screen subtitles that appear when the "footage" is paused. The style of this music video is displayed in the same way. The music video was a tribute to a TV crime dramas such as Hawaii Five-O. In this music video Spike once again uses his trade mark by the use of camera techniques and miss en scene. Another fantastic piece of work that Spike Jonze directed was Praise You by Fatboy Slim. The music video for Praise You was shot in front of theatre in Westwood Califonia. The music video feature Spike himself in the video along with a fictional dance group that is performing live for the people lining up to get into the theatre. The music video cost only $800 to produce with most of that money going towards a brand new boom box and food for the cast and crew. This music video went onto win three awards at 1999 MTV video music awards. It was also nominated for Best Dance video but sadly did not win. He also worked with Weezer and produced a music video called Buddy Holly which payys respect to a Rock N Roll artist (Buddy Holly) who was labelled as the most inspirational and influential singer songwriter musicians. Throughout the music video there is live action from the band playing on the original set of Arnold's Drive In Diner from a 70's Tv show Know as Happy Days. The use of original cast members and band members creates the felling of union and this makes viewers feel like they are watching an episode of Happy Days as they are the live audience that are viewing the and enjoying the video. At the beginning of the music video credits are shown which clearly clearly displays Spike Jonze as the director which allows the music video to be viewed as a TV episode rather than music video. Finally the visual storytelling that is used in the music video is off beat and has an extremely imaginative aspect to it. This makes it to appear as part of the TV show. In conclusion Spike Jonze is an autuer theorist because of his consistency of ideas that are used through his productions which makes him cleanly recognisable by viewers. From the music videos that i have analysed he tends to use a mix of live action and music that complements the music video. Also his music videos generally seem to be influenced by things that have happened and people that he has met in his past. While analysing I also noticed that he always portrays them effectively within his work. He often is also known for the working with well known names that he regularly work films and produces with for example Cinematographer Lance Acord and Actor Chris Cooper.
